FFXIV Content Warning List
Rape (There are no rape scenes in FFXIV. HOWEVER there are multiple mentions of it in some sidequests and Stormblood. In Stormblood this is the major plot point of a character named Yotsuyu, a Doman woman who was abused by her parental figures as a child and raped during her time as a sex slave after her parents abandoned her. The man who got Yotsuyu into this situation gets excused by Hein during one of the worst scenes in Stormblood. Yotsuyu’s arc is nothing but a mockery of comfort women and it is disgusting that this was greenlit. Another example of rape being explicitly mentioned is with Arenvald's backstory cutscene in Stormblood where it's implied that his mother was raped by Garlean.)
Sexual Assault (There are no visual examples of this in FFXIV but there is a case of this with Livia, one of the antagonists characters in ARR. Another case involves Arenvalid again where he's been implied to have been born after his mother was assaulted by a Garlean.)
Abuse (This is especially the case in the Werlyt questline where it displays multiple forms of abuse and torture with no warning.)
Torture (Another form of triggering content that is found in Werlyt with no warning)
Racism (FFXIV includes racism from multiple characters especially those who are associated with Gridania including in the Archer and Lancer sidequests and the Garlean Empire. Some of this racism involves the terms "half-breed" (one time through Arenvald's backstory scene), "mongrel" (a few times in relation to Hilda, a mixed race Elezen and Hyur character in Heavensword), and "savage" (a term that is used by the Garleans a lot). Another major example of racism is the way Ala Mhigans are treated in the story in comparison to the Domans in Stormblood. There is also the racism that can be seen with the Xaela through how some of the Xaela tribes are portrayed and described. With how the Xaela are coded as Mongol, this is a serious problem especially when Hein uses their cultures as a tool to recruit them for a war they had no involvement in. The Doma storyline and North Othard itself (South Othard is Ivalice land) involves a lot of gross pan-asianism that is Japanese centric and later on has a grossly written plotline where Hein wants a "Xaela Army". Meanwhile Ala Mhigo which is obvious based on the SWANA region gets written with way less attention and care to the point where much of their story gets sidelined in a good chunk of Stormblood. There is also racism involving the beast tribes (the ARR and Heavensward ones) where they are obviously based off of various groups of Indigenous people and are demonized through the Eorzean citystate's ethnonationalism and racism. The way the beast tribes are treated makes a lot of Indigenous players including myself uncomfortable and it is thankfully not an issues with the beast tribes in ShB. Another example of FFXIV not being fair to Indigenous people is in the Blue Mage 1-50 questline that involves a white savior plotline. There is also a gearset introduced in 3.4 that involves the cultural appropriation of various Indigenous peoples from North America esp in regards to various plains peoples like the Oceti Sakowin)
Colorism (Colorism is par for the course in all Final Fantasy and SE games but Stormblood has the worst colorism out of all the current expansions alongside Shadowbringers where Y'shtola and 2P get whitewashed. One of the other examples that exists in Stormblood is Lakshmi's character design where she is light-skinned in comparison to the Indian coded Ananta.)
Antisemitism (This is mainly a problem in the English translation but in this game there is a group of greedy goblins who want a perfect world to control called the Illuminati (this name is in the English translation but this still deserves a mention.)
Misogyny (This is a problem that exists throughout FFXIV including with all of its female characters including Y'shtola herself who is one of the better female characters in the game. Bitch is a term that is said by some characters throughout the game and the few female antagonists that exist are not given the same treatment that nearly every male antagonist receives. A few examples can be seen with Fordola and Yotsuyu. The worst thing FFXIV has done in Heavensward is the death of Ysayle and some of the ways she is written before that scene. It is NOT strictly the death itself that is the problem, the way Ysayle is treated throughout 3.0 and after her death is a problem too.)
Orientalism (FFXIV has this problem by leaps and bounds including with some of its outfits especially for the Dancer class. A lot of SWANA and South Asian + SE Asian players are worried about this being a problem with Thavnair and Radz-at-Han when Endwalker comes out. There is also an orientalism problem in Shadowbringers through Ran'jit, Eulmore (through its super orientalist Indian boudoir architecture style and being viewed as 'backwards' compared to the Crystarium and its British industrial architecture), Mord Souq (Arab coded kobolds who eat worms and are obsessed with gold and live in a "souq" aka marketplace? Very classy FFXIV team), and most of Amh Araeng tbh)
Jump Scares (There is a jump scare during the cutscene that begins after you finish the quest for Tam-Tara Hard Mode. Another jumpscare can be found during the level 73 sidequest cutscene with a character called Titania where they will jump scare the player with absolutely no warning before the cutscene ends. The newest jumpscare can be found in the last alliance raid for the NieR + FFXIV crossover questline.)
Fascism (This will be seen everywhere with the Garlean Empire and some of the Ascians. This is especially the case with Gaius, Varis, the emperor of the Garlean Empire, Varis's son Zenos, and an Asian called Emet-Selch. Gaius through the ARR/2.0 storyline spouts fascist and imperialist ideology and its later revealed that he ruled over Gyr Abania after it was conquered by the Empire. Later in the story through Shadowbringers, Gaius has a poorly done redemption arc that does not truly put him to task for what he's done. Also the way he raised his adoptive children especially Livia was horrendous. Varis has a scene in SB 4.5 Part 2 where he harps pro fascist and imperialist ideology during his speech. Zenos like his father is an imperialist and fascist but what makes him horrible in his own way is his character trait of murdering people for fun to the point where this is what he was known for during his time ruling an occupied Gyr Abania after Gaius left. At one point in the story he experiments on at least two characters. Emet-Selch during the Shadowbringers story is a fascist and imperialist eugenicist who mentions multiple accounts of these ideals in almost all of his cutscenes. For Jewish FFXIV players and FFXIV players of color, this is incredibly uncomfortable to experience and it deserves a warning. FFXIV especially in some parts of ShB and the post game patches has a problem where it involves centrist sympathizing with with some of its antagonists esp Emet-Selch, Elidibus, and Fandaniel to the point where it comes off as gross.)
Imperialism (Like the fascism this will be a common reoccurrence mainly from the Garlean Empire and Ascians. Gaius, Varis, Zenos, and Emet-Selch are examples yet again. In the Werlyt questline there is the main villain who spouts imperialist ideology while either abusing or torturing people. The ways FFXIV talks about imperialism is a hit and miss because sometimes this game is anti-imperialist (as seen in Stormblood and later Bozja, a questline that is very anti-imperialist) and other times the writing becomes centrist to the point of coming off as imperialist apologia (like Werlyt, a questline that is honestly irresponsibly written.)
Body Horror (This warning mostly applies to Shadowbringers with basically its entire storyline and Werlyt. One of the more graphic depictions of this can be found in 5.1 where the player has to fight a human experiment of the Ultima Weapon. Werlyt involves an entire plotline where the Weapons are created and operated through the experimentation of people.)
Blood (Blood becomes a lot more common in Stormblood and Shadowbringers.)
Gore: There are not very many examples of this but the biggest one I can remember is in Heavensward thanks to the scene where Nidhogg talks to his brother after getting his eyes gouged out.)
Fatphobia (This is mainly a problem in Shadowbringers through Vauthry. While Vaulthry is considered a terrible person for his exploitation of the poor, the community, and the entitlement he carries but even with this in mind, the trope of fat = evil is tired and it needs to go.)
Ableism (The latest example with this is in Arenvald's plotline in the post ShB patches. However, an earlier example can be seen in the SB post patches where a part of Yotsuyu's post game story portrays her in the weirdly written daughter-grandparent dynamic she and Gosetsu had along with how her trauma and amnesia were treated (at least she gets to deal with her abusive parents and Asahi). It can be seen that the writers intended well but they should have hired a sensitivity consultant)
The caste system and slavery plotline of Eulmore (Shadowbringers has a city called Eulmore, a city with orientalist Indian style architecture and is run by a caste system that involves slavery through a group of people called the Bonded. This gets criticized and is explicitly seen as wrong in the story. However this plotline deserves a place on this list and I wish I and other people got warned about it. Slavery is a horrible thing to be reminded of especially for Black and Indigenous people and not everyone wants to come across plotlines like this while playing a game. Also with the included orientalism, this was incredibly irresponsible on the FFXIV team's part and Eulmore is be far the worst part of Shadowbringers.)
